Alcohol Testing in Israel: What a Driver Should Do
Refusal, inaccurate explanations and missing documents may complicate a defence. Stay calm, follow the procedure and record its details.
At the roadside
Stop safely, comply with lawful instructions and avoid confrontation. Do not argue about a device result before the procedure is complete, and do not estimate drinking times or quantities if you are unsure.
Refusing a test may have serious legal consequences. If you do not understand an instruction, calmly ask the officer to explain it again.
Different tests serve different purposes
A screening device, behavioural observations and an evidential breath test are not the same thing. The sequence, timing, documentation, equipment and compliance with police procedure may all matter.
I examine the entire file: reports, printouts, video, officer evidence and the driver’s account—not a single number in isolation.
What to keep
- every report and test printout;
- the exact time of the stop and each test;
- information about medication and health conditions;
- passenger and witness contact details;
- scene photographs and dashcam material, if available.
New and young drivers
Stricter rules apply to certain driver categories, and consequences may affect both the case and continued licensing. Show the papers to a traffic lawyer promptly.
